The temporomandibular joint is a hinge joint that joins the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone with the condyle of the mandible through a fibro cartilaginous disc or meniscus and closed by a joint capsule.
There are two joints that work in synergy. They allow the movement of the mandible (jaw) to the skull and has several functions:
-
mastication
-
phonation
-
yawning
The muscles that mobilize the joint are masticatory muscles such as the temporalis muscle, masseter muscle, the pterygoid muscles and the muscles overlying hyoà ¯ dien. They determine the movement:
-
propulsion retropulsion of the mandible (chin forward or back)
-
lowering and elevation (opening and closing of the mouth)
-
of lateral excursion (lateral movements)
Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint
Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint resulting in pain, crunches, projections for the opening and closing. Its proximity to the ear can cause tinnitus, ear pain or dizziness or ear bite.
The causes of dysfunction are:
-
A bad bite: any degradation of the occlusion affects futures articulation of the jaws.
-
The existence of bruxism (teeth shake, cringe or bruxism) generated or aggravated by stress.
The temporomandibular joint is a synovial joints uniting the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone with the condyle of the mandible through a fibro cartilaginous disc or meniscus and closed by a joint capsule.
Side view of the articulation of the mandible
There are two joints that work in synergy. They allow the movement of the mandible (jaw) to the skull and has several functions:
- swallowing, saliva or mealtime (Food)
- chewing
- phonation,
- yawning
The muscles that mobilize the joint between the jaws and masticatory muscles are postural muscles: muscles of mastication, such as the temporalis muscle, the masseter or pterygoid, and suprahyoid muscles and sub-hyoid. They determine the movement:
- propulsion or retropulsion of the mandible (chin forward or back)
- lowering or elevation (opening or closing the mouth)
- of lateral excursion (lateral movements)
Dysfunctional syndrome of the temporomandibular joint
The pathology of the temporomandibular joint resulting in muscle pain (myalgia), crunches, projections for the opening and closing. Its proximity to the ear can cause tinnitus, ear pain or dizziness or ear bite.
The causes of dysfunction are:
- A bad bite: any degradation of the occlusion affects futures articulation of the jaws.
- The existence of bruxism (teeth shake, cringe or bruxism) or generated, often aggravated by stress.
- Dysfunction in the game of agonist and antagonist muscles, or a reduction in the phase of physiological rest of the muscles or muscle cramps.
- A difference in the height of the lower limbs.
- Improper position of the tongue resulting in bad swallowing saliva.
